READIN’ ‘RITIN’ n ‘RITHMETIC Only 24 percent of US-born Latinos have graduated from college or higher as compared to nearly 55 percent of whites and nearly 28 percent of blacks in the region. Fifty-five percent of foreign-born Latinos have less than a high school diploma compared to nearly 29 percent of US-born Latinos, 22 percent of blacks, and only about 9 percent of whites. In the region 60 percent of Latinos own and occupy their homes compared to 84 percent of whites and close to 47 percent of blacks. Of those eligible to vote, 58 percent of Latinos were registered compared to 76 percent of whites and 74 percent of blacks. According to a 2008 report issued by the Gilead Outreach & Referral Center, 26 percent of Latinos in the Chicago metro area17 were uninsured, compared to 21 percent of blacks and 7 percent of whites. Responding to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2007, 86 percent of whites in the State of Illinois said their health was “Good” or “Excellent” compared to 76 percent of blacks and 70 percent of Latinos. read more

Erica Gersic, administrative assistant for the Perry County Chamber of Commerce, works in the office Friday morning. Perry County Chamber of Commerce President Jamie Brown has invested close to $20,000 of her own money to get the county chamber started. Since moving to the county in the summer of 2007, Brown said, she has been impressed with the work ethic, history and values in Perry County. A high percentage of residents travel beyond the borders of Perry County for work, so economic development needs to be a priority, she argued, with job creation as one of the chamber goals. Brown also hopes county municipalities will look to join the chamber. read more

This new podcast directory has over 12,000 podcast feeds online now and also accepts podcast reviews to be added to a podcaster’s show page. Podcasters can get active, [encouraging their listeners and viewers to submit] reviews and comments about their podcast on their Zune. This is the first new podcast directory to come online in a long time, and I’m glad to see (at least a tiny little) reaching out to all the podcast creators who do their work on a Mac. The ability to submit reviews of podcasts, for display on the podcast series’ page, is a great one for helping podcast viewers and listeners discover which shows to download. read more
