Voting 2.0, Part 2: The Open Source Proposition - MacNewsWorld(linkdirectoryNews)

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 8:03 am

E-BUSINESS | TECHNOLOGY | CRM | LINUX | MAC | EXCLUSIVES | ECTNEWS. Part 2 explores whether open source software in electronic voting machines is the solution. One idea that has been tried out is attaching a printer to each machine so that a ballot could be printed out and deposited into the ballot box in paper form, Dill noted, but “printers are expensive, and they break often. What Dill’s group recommends now is a system in which voters fill out a paper ballot themselves, and then put it into a scanner, which is also the ballot box, he said. In the wake of Felten’s findings, renewed calls have been sounded for an open source voting system. The Open Voting Consortium believes that all aspects of an election need to be open to public scrutiny — something a paper trail alone can’t provide. read more

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 7:45 am

E-BUSINESS | TECHNOLOGY | CRM | LINUX | MAC | EXCLUSIVES | ECTNEWS. The spammers masqueraded as Yahoo in order to con people out of hundreds of dollars, telling the victims that they won cash prizes, Yahoo alleges. In its court filing, Yahoo contends that the defendants masqueraded as the Internet company, sending out e-mails claiming recipients had won prizes ranging from a few thousand to a million dollars and instructing them to click on a link or forward personal information to a “Yahoo lottery coordinator” to get their prize. At times, recipients were instructed to contact another party to arrange for the prize payment, Yahoo said in the filing, and this other party would charge them “hundreds of dollars in various processing and mailing charges in order to complete the payment process. Although the defendants’ identities are unknown, Yahoo thinks that information acquired during a discovery period from third-party e-mail service companies will lead to their identification. Several days before Yahoo filed its suit, a federal judge ordered a notorious “Spam King” and his partner to pay News Corp. read more

Please input the letters/numbers that appear in the image below. In that case, RIAA representatives accused Project Playlist of constructing a business model that “amounts to nothing more than a massive infringement. You may be able to find links to things thanks to say google, but at least sites like those aren’t actively gathering those such links to purposely help people get pirated works. I feel that if the laws accurately reflected the desires of those holding the IP, it would cover the situation, but it’s already a stretch to say these laws should cover special interest groups, and if their desires are being met we can reasonably say they desire for google, yahoo, etc, to also be forced not to index anything either. A torrent itself isn’t copyrighted content, it’s an open-source file format. Why should the internet be free, it has cost billions of dollars (the military at work, then our governments = your and my money). read more

(linkdirectoryNews) Q&A, NOW - Washington Post

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 6:31 am

I’m thinking of the times where I’m doing a clean install of XP and my "internet usage" consists of downloading updates from Microsoft prior to the initial installation of any type of antivirus (which does require downloading from the vendor site). Anti-virus software is not always going to catch threats; these companies are having to deal with tens of thousands of new threats each day, and when it comes to so-called "zero day" threats — exploits for vulnerabilities no one knew about before — their detection of these threats is dismal (see my post Don’t Depend on Anti-virus to Save You and the related story linked in that blog post for an idea of the scale of this malware glut. Hate to sound like a broken record here, folks, but most of the malware out there today depends on the user running their OS/and/or Internet-facing apps like the browser under the all-powerful administrator account, which has complete rights to change vital system settings, delete files, etc. If the user had to enter a password mainly for installing software on Vista, I think that would probably make users think twice about what’s really going on, particularly when they didn’t request a software install. I have read every Microsoft "knowledge base" document on XP file sharing, sharing is enabled on all three machines, I have tried every combination of sharing settings for user, machine, and workgroup, and I still get "Access denied" when trying to move or copy files between "My Network Places. read more

Create Another Version of the Unix Cal Command - PC World- Topic: linkdirectoryNews

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 6:19 am

If that’s not enough, though, there are numerous third-party programs that also work with calendars–everything from full-blown iCal replacements such as Now Up to Date to simpler utilities, such as MenuCalendarClock for iCal, which we looked at back in 2005 , and again more recently in this Macworld video . We’re going to solve that problem by creating a symbolic link (something like an alias in the Finder) that “creates” ncal by connecting it to the existing cal executable. If ncal were to have completely vanished at this point, anyone who used it in scripts would have to go back and modify all their scripts to refer to cal instead of ncal. Thanks to this feature, people with scripts that used ncal didn’t have to modify their code, they just needed to create the ncal symbolic link, and all their scripts would keep working. To make it easy to run our “new” ncal program, we’ll create it in the /usr/local/bin directory, which is a directory that OS X knows about (i. read more

MPs dodge petrol pain - News.com.au- Topic: linkdirectoryNews

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 6:18 am

As for the idiots blaming Kevin Rudd for the high price of petrol, just take a look at what has happened to world oil prices since your beloved John Howard decided to support George Bush's war on Iraq, dimwits. The plan is SIMPLE Take away the government tax funded fuel cards for MP's and let these arogant people "who are that far detached from real working class people and theier day to day issues" pay for their own fuel. Second, had the Government invested the billions of dollars it's been stripping from the public over the decades in fuel excise and invested it in our own oil production (as suggested by Peter of Rocky) then we would have our own independent oil supply. Rudd never said that he would bring down oil prices or food prices, he just said he would start a body to monitor the prices. To keep petrol prices low I suggest we invade Iraq (make up some nonsense about WMD & links to Al Qaeda to fool the voters) - then we can secure their oil reserves to ensure stable cheap oil prices so we dont have to bother conserving any. World Oil Prices seem to be set by the stock market, and Australian Oil Prices seem to be from Singapore, so whenever Singapore prices go up so does Australia's. read more
