Kaneland’s 50th Anniversary Committee is challenging each of Kaneland’s graduating classes from the past 50 years to collect at least $1,000 from each class by the end of the 2008-09 school year. The first out of the starting gate is the Class of 1988, of which the assistant principal of the middle school, Kris Weiss, is an alum. The class plans to raise money by raffling off a quilt made of Kaneland T-shirts. The donations raised will be divided between a fund to create and support a Kaneland Alumni Association and the Legacy Fund that will be used to enrich school programs. In anticipation of the anniversary year, the committee produced a directory with contact information for the 3,000 alums who responded to the requests. Alumni will gather at the homecoming football game against DeKalb High School that Friday night and move on to a post-game social hour. read more

Adding a live Internet chat room or forum is a very simple process at the station web site end, by simply adding a link on your site pointing to the Internet chat or forum. Your listeners need not download any special software to utilize the Internet chat, it uses Java technology, which is standard in modern Internet browsers. read more

A new study released by the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio shows that pregnant moms may be more at risk to giving birth to children with autism the closer they live to mercury-emitting sources like power plants. A newly published study of Texas school district data and industrial mercury-release data gathered by researchers at the Health Science Center and Our Lady of the Lake University shows a statistically significant link between pounds of industrial release of mercury and increased autism rates. It also shows for the first time in scientific literature, according to local researchers, a statistically significant association between autism risk and distance from the mercury source. Researchers examined mercury-release data from 39 coal-fired plants and 56 industrial facilities in Texas and autism rates from 1,040 Texas school districts. read more
