Want to compare doctors online? Some Health 2.0 startups want to make … - About: linkdirectoryNews

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 5:10 am

A group of nine healthcare companies and providers are aiming to turn the tables on often disorganized medical record-keeping â” by standardizing information about doctors themselves. The effort, known as dCard, is aimed at bringing a certain degree of order to the mishmash of information that dozens of online physician directory and rating services currently deal with. Most of these sites grab as much basic information about doctors as they can from publicly available sources â” typically consisting, at a minimum, of the doctorâs specialty, contact information, and medical education â” then rely on doctors themselves to flesh it out, correct any errors and provide updates, which is pretty clearly untenable for any but those most committed to keeping their online âpersonasâ up-to-date. The solution offered by these nine organizations is to standardize a sort of âdoctor dossierâ via dCard â” which, straightforwardly enough, stands for âdata card. Web page addresses and e-mail addresses turn into links automatically. read more

Windows Live Hobbled by Daylong Outage- About: linkdirectoryNews

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 4:54 am

Many Windows Live servers are now running on Windows Server 2008, according to an interview with Bob Muglia, senior vice president of Microsoft’s Server and Tools Business, on CNET’s News. The issue affected the Windows Live ID log-in process and for the most part spared customers who were already logged in, Windows Live product manager Samantha McManus said. The problem was resolved by the end of the day, Microsoft said, but in the meantime Microsoft’s Live Hotmail e-mail service along with instant messaging, photo sharing, calendaring, storage and other services had been affected. The company lays claim to more than 400 million Live ID users and 280 million Live Hotmail users worldwide. The outage came just a day before Microsoft’s launch of its new Windows Server 2008 operating system for servers, which CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled Wednesday in Los Angeles. read more

(linkdirectoryNews) Methods To Promote Websites on Digg

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 4:32 am

The existing social bookmarking services have different functioning principles regarding the websites URLs promotion and publishing, but, for the website owner, the presence of a direct link in a “social bookmarking directory” will always represent an advantage from many points of view. The majority of webmasters know that the chances of a website URL to be discovered are higher in case of the most popular social bookmarking services. Another method to increase the chances that one or more of your websites URLs to be bookmarked on Digg is the implementation of a social bookmarking button containing links to multiple services, like the buttons offered by AddThis. The increase of your website traffic will be visible if your website gets on Digg, but the most important aspect that every webmaster should have in mind before implementing social bookmarking buttons and related links is the assurance of a certain quality level of content creation and presentation. Don't let phishers hook you- Topic: linkdirectoryNews

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 4:07 am

If you click on a link in a phishing e-mail you are taken to a copy of the genuine site that has been downloaded and moved to another server - usually outside of legal jurisdiction - and changed for nefarious purposes. I like to investigate the phishing e-mails I get - don’t try this at home, kids - and if you know how you can check the URL or the IP number of the phishing site (without downloading malware) with Whois, a phone book-like directory, and discover where the Internet provider is located. The fake e-mail promised a refund on my taxes, and the phishing site had the IRS graphics and style copied exactly, but it had spelling and grammar mistakes, the IP was from South Korea and the Web site code revealed the hackers e-mail address there. Many bank sites have tried to mitigate phishing risks with features like personalized “site keys” and multiple captchas - images of squiggly letters and or numbers that you must enter on the site - but according to a security firm consulted in the New York Times article, many financial institutions are asleep at the wheel. read more

College Tour 2008 - Stanford University- About: linkdirectoryNews

When you start to take products like cars and planes or any physical product, do the design digitally, share those plans around, let people try out simulation models, what might happen with that product over a period of time, you’re shortening design cycles. When people come to me and say, hey, would you put a research center in a certain place, I used to say, well, if you have a billion people, we’ll put a research center there, because we have one in China, one in India, one in the United States — now we have three in the United States, so obviously I’m breaking my criteria that you have to have a billion people. Today, the amount of data in most of these sciences is large enough that we can say that computer software and databases and pattern matching that come out of software breakthroughs are really important for what is going on in the sciences, particularly in biology, but I’d say almost as strongly for astronomy where the amount of data and taking a theory about the density of things, the creation of things, it’s not just one telescope, it’s not just being there at midnight and seeing something cool and writing it up and getting the Nobel Prize; rather it’s deep analysis across massive amounts of data. So, I see some sign of interest in it, but of the people who are trained, you know, you’d think if you’re trained in software, you’d know at least a little bit about software helping the poor; if you’re trained in medicine, you’d know about medicine helping the poor, but the majority of people who go to these top institutions don’t really even get the basic framework. Tele-presence type things help in a few isolated cases where you have common language, and people understand the disease or the thing they’re dealing with, but it’s still frustrating that having lots of expertise move into these countries and being willing to stay there, it’s more just the willingness on the part of the rich countries, certainly the poor countries in most cases in any reasonable governance situation are very, very interested. read more

Topic: linkdirectoryNews - Windows 2008 Server: Faster, more manageable and secure, but still …

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 2:57 am

In our testing of Windows Server 2008 gold code – the product officially launches on Wednesday – we found that Microsoft has made a number of improvements to its flagship server operating system. For example, new server administrative role schemes boost security, the Server Manager program improves manageability, Internet Information Server (IIS) Web management functionality is revamped, Active Directory is easier to control, and Windows Terminal Services has been redesigned. Windows Server 2008 is also significantly faster than Windows Server 2003, especially when client machines are running Vista. Microsoft includes a beta version of Hyper-V with Windows Server 2008 editions, but it will not release final code until the third quarter of this year. The Microsoft NAP scheme uses client-side ‘health certificates’ to either give or deny clients access to the network An ‘unhealthy’ client is vectored to remediation servers for necessary antivirus updates or security patches ( compare NAC products . Microsoft wants administrators of Windows Server 2008 editions (it will ship in the usual flavors of Standard, Enterprise, Data Center and Itanium-specific code) to think of the server as playing certain roles. read more
