That statement, or something like it, lurked in the background on Wednesday as educators and campus technology officers at the annual Educause conference here in Seattle discussed, engaged and sometimes struggled with the dilemmas posed by the e-mail and social networking habits that students routinely bring with them as incoming freshmen. Participants in a morning session at the meeting of Educause, the nonprofit organization that promotes the “intelligent use of information technology” in higher education, grappled with these issues as they apply to campus e-mail services, while an afternoon discussion covered just about everything else, from social networking to Wikipedia and instant messaging. At Northwestern University, the “aging e-mail infrastructure” — as Wendy Woodward, the director of technology support services there, put it in the morning session — wasn’t necessarily ideal for students, many of whom were already dedicated Gmail users. The gap Christoph referred to was in full display when her afternoon audience was asked to split into two roles — incoming students and university “providers” — to brainstorm how to look for a roommate. Help students, staff, and faculty effectively apply technology to achieve academic goals; provide technology-related project . read more

Topic: linkdirectoryNews - Can Healthy Web Site Traffic Save Newspapers?

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 4:52 pm

Newspaper Web sites attracted a record audience in 2007, with an average of 60 million unique visitors each month, according to data compiled by ACNielsen’s online tracking network and released Thursday by the Newspaper Association of America. Thirty-eight percent of all active online users logged onto newspaper Web sites in 2007, the NAA data reported, compared with 36 percent a year earlier. Most visits averaged fewer than 20 minutes per stop at the most popular newspaper sites — for the others, the average stay was much shorter. Features like external links, blogs and videos have helped attracted information-hungry Web browsers to newspaper sites, according to McGuire. read more

Drive-By Pharmers Harvest Personal Data- Topic: linkdirectoryNews

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 3:33 pm

The new attack — which targets wireless routers — is similar to other pharming hacks in that it reroutes the domain name system (DNS) server used by any device that connects to the Internet. If a pharmer can get into an end user’s system, they can reroute every Web page that person visits, said Eric Wolbrom, cofounder of Information Survival , a New York-based company that stores individuals’ personal information in a secure digital “deposit box” online. Pharmers — who generally steer clear of the more secure bank or ISP DNS servers — attack users individually, looking for vulnerabilities. The easiest protection from router attacks, said Wolbrom, is to make sure that either your personal computer or your wireless router is connected to a familiar DNS server, such as OpenDNS , an open source network that offers an extra layer of protection against such pharming. The problem is that some cable services require users to access specific DNS servers in order for the new, bundled media services — television, phone and cable — to work properly, Wolbrom said. read more

Filed under: linkdirectoryNews — linkdire @ 1:52 pm

Vishing operates like phishing by persuading consumers to submit Personally Identifiable Information (PII), claiming their account was suspended, deactivated or terminated, according to the FBI website. Recipients are then directed to contact the bank via a telephone number provided in the e-mail or by an automated recording. Do not open any unsolicited e-mail and do not click on any links provided,” the FBI warns. Beware of e-mails, telephone calls or text messages requesting your PII,” the warning continues. Instead, it said, contact the bank using a telephone number - obtained from, say, bank statements or the phone directory - for questions regarding account or credit/debit card. A new version involves text messages to cell phones that a recipient’s on-line bank account has expired. read more
