The best and worst thing about the new iPhone is the touch screen, which dispenses with a space-consuming keypad, allowing the phone to have a beautiful 3½-inch-diagonal high-resolution screen to view videos and Web pages. Apple has put its Safari Internet browser on the phone and the Mac OS (operating system), so many programs will be familiar to Mac users. Safari’s presence has opened up the phone to developers who can create third-party applications that you can use to beef up the phone. But the third-party applications will primarily be using Web access, which may be slow, and they don’t reside on the phone itself. read more

Once it’s there, quit your browser, then double-click on the Windows Media Player icon, and follow the instructions. Why can’t I watch some videos in Windows Media Player ? If you already have RealPlayer, and still can’t see the video, try upgrading your browser, checking for Windows updates, and upgrading your DirectX drivers. VIDEO PLAYER Select your video player plugin preference to the right. We support both Windows Media Player and Real Media streaming video. A skin changes the background and color of the video player, but does not affect the actual video. read more

Park your car on the mainland and catch a ferry to a kicked-back, relaxing island haven where rapid transit means horse-drawn carriages. This peaceful destination is Michigan's Mackinac Island, in Lake Huron just off the northern tip of the state's Lower Peninsula. Take a look at "History" for highlights of its past as Anishinaabe-Ojibwe holy ground, French fur traders' outpost, British fort and fishing port. Look to the bottom of the page for the small, hard-to-read-on-a-small-screen links to dining, shopping and carriage tours, plus hiking & biking and things to do on the water including fishing, sailing and sunset cruises. Most of the island is preserved as Mackinac Island State Park, 1,800 acres of forest, rock formations and hiking trails. read more

Mondosoft also augments its MondoSearch enterprise search product with InformationManager, a tool that provides a link between MondoSearch and BehaviorTracking. MondoSearch collects information for BehaviorTracking, then InformationManager can be used to modify the behavior of MondoSearch. The three products mentioned above are licensed separately but are all needed to realize the full potential of enterprise search that Mondosoft offers. BehaviorTracking provides the analysis needed to configure InformationManager to help MondoSearch improve relevancy of results. For more advanced security features, like ACL caching or integration with eDirectory, you’ll have to depend on a third-party consultant to provide the needed functionality–Mondosoft does not expose its APIs, with the exception of an extensive API for querying the search engine through a Web service. Some of the other products in this review provide basic analysis of have users are using the system, but Mondosoft intends BehaviorTracking to go above and beyond. read more

I haven’t come closer than a hundred feet to an iPhone, Apple’s combination phone, widescreen iPod music and video player and Internet device that hits the stores June 29. One of the coolest design ideas that Apple contributed here is that you turn on the phone by sweeping your finger across the screen. But the touch screen doesn’t come with force feedback, which gives your fingers a vibrating buzz as you touch the screen. If you dial someone by tapping a number on the touch screen, you won’t know it unless you’re looking at the screen as you hit the right number. It’s nice that Apple has put its Safari Internet browser on the phone and the Mac OS as well, so a lot of programs will be familiar to Mac users. Safari’s presence has opened up the phone to developers who can create third-party applications that you can use to beef up the phone. read more

During its second full meeting since the kickoff in April, the coalition agreed to begin a project that would focus on identifying some of the larger substance abuse issues young people face. Before approving a motion to conduct a similar project in Wilson, a few coalition members mulled over what material may be inappropriate to show at a church, pointing out the graphic and vulgar nature of some of the T-shirt slogans. The coalition will also begin to work with the Counseling Services department at Barton College, as the school plans a drunken driving prevention activity in October. Courtney Manning, director of Barton College Counseling Services, hired Save a Life Tour to set up a drunken driving simulator at Wilson Gymnasium on Oct. read more

Chief Executive Officer Terry Semel, who revived the company after the Internet bust before being surpassed by Google Inc. The stock gained 4 percent Monday after Yahoo named co-founder Jerry Yang its CEO and said Susan Decker, who had been an executive vice president, will become president. Semel, who joined Yahoo as CEO in 2001, overhauled the company’s sales force and bought companies such as Overture Services Inc. Yahoo wasn’t able to keep up with the growth of Google, which now has more than twice the sales of Yahoo. The shares had their first stumble in four years in 2006, declining 35 percent after the company delayed a new advertising program called Project Panama and reported results that disappointed investors. Google’s sales surpassed Yahoo’s in the fourth quarter of 2004 as searching the Web become more popular among consumers and companies bought more of the four-line text links that appear next to search results. read more
